Portrait Sculpture from Life • with James Shoop

From the Spring 2018 Schedule:

Master sculptor James Shoop is a fountain of experience and information. A professional sculptor since 1983, he first apprenticed in his father's foundry where he worked in all areas of production. James moved on to study classical sculpture at the National Academy of Design, the Art Students' League, and the New York Academy of Art.

During this workshop Shoop will guide each participant in creating a portrait head in clay, from armature, to anatomy, to the finished work. Perfect deeper study for those who paint from life.

SCHEDULE: Sign up for one, two, or three weekends of study.

Weekend One: April 7 - 8

  • Build an armature
  • Learn the structure of the head 
  • Create initial form

Weekend Two: April 14 - 15

  • Refine the features
  • Capture a Likeness
  • Learn sculpting techniques

Weekend Three: May 5 - 6

  • Refine and complete the project
  • Learn about mold making and casting techniques
  • Discuss historical perspectives on portrait sculpture

Open Studio Workday: April 28

Included for all participants, a chance to work from the model without instruction.


One Weekend, two full days of study + open studio day $350

Two Weekends, four full days of study + open studio day $630 (10% discount)

Three Weekends, 6 full days of study: + open studio day $840 (20% discount)
