The Egyptian Series - Charles Gilbert Kapsner

Opens May 15

Egypt has always been a fascinating place for me...since childhood. In 2025, my wife, Catherine and I traveled to Egypt and I finally got to see the place I'd thought about for an entire lifetime. I have immersed myself in capturing paintings and drawings of the places I saw.

Camel in Front of Khafre’s Pyramid

(Rest Stop)

This setting is on the Giza Plateau. I was working near the Great Pyramid of Khufu, which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. I came upon the camel, which are a big part of life in the desert because of their ability to go very long periods of time without water (not to mention a big tourist attraction). With that said, I didn't do a camel ride. But I did a drawing.

It wasn't until I got back to my studio and started to review my photos where this image really caught my attention. The small charcoal and white chalk sketch--to the right of this drawing—was the first one I created. Secondly, I crafted the technical drawing on onion skin paper—which is to the left of this drawing. Working on these smaller pieces provided the accuracy needed for this piece, which is done in graphite and white chalk.

This drawing is the most elaborate pencil drawing I have done, estimating somewhere between 90 -100 hours on the camel alone. The drawing itself was probably near 300+ hours. Drawing is truly my first love, so this piece was very satisfying to take the time to do.

LOCATION/BACKGROUND: Pyramid of Khafre, 4th Dynasty (2558 – 2532 BC)

This pyramid is the backdrop of the drawing, where some of the Tura limestone casing is still visible on the top. Originally the whole pyramid would have been covered by this, however, over the centuries, stealing casing from pyramids was quite common, which is why on many of them, one cannot see it at all anymore. Between Dynasties 3-12,

(2686–1782 BC) over 100 pyramids were built.

“Remember nature is your teacher, I am your guide”, was a prevailing theme in the studio of Nerina Simi (1890 – 1987), where Charles Kapsner’s greatest learning as a painter occurred.

His artistic roots are planted in the 15thCentury, yet he remains a contemporary painter whose compositions fuse old and new.

Kapsner is an Art Renewal Center Associate Living MasterTM (ARCALM), a member of the Oil Painters of America (OPA), Portrait Society of America (PSA) and the International Guild of Realism (IGOR). He received a Career Achievement Award from the Florence Biennale, Master Artist from the Five Wings Arts Council, a Public Service Commendation from the United States Coast Guard, and the Superior Volunteer Service Medal, the highest award given to a civilian by the Adjutant General of Minnesota National Guard.

"Shane Wolf, founder of The Figure Society, is one of the rare masters of figurative art who upholds the tradition of working uniquely from life as long as it takes to create his works (no photographic references are ever used). He says the lively exchanges between the models and the artist are essential to his art, allowing him to constantly evolve and invent new ways of exploring the power and beauty of the human form, and always Nude." - REALISM TODAY

Sketches into Paintings - Steven J. Levin

Showing works from this 2025 collection - ongoing

"Sketches into Paintings" features a rare look at Steven Levin's process, featuring selections from his personal collection of pieces created to prepare for his final paintings.

Steven Levin’s evocative works offer a unique vision to traditional and contemporary subjects. There is a discernible resonance here with the motifs of a classical painter but there is also a modern current to the works that is at times whimsical and always compelling..

'A painting, a work of art always begins with an idea in the artist’s mind. The difficulty for an artist is getting the idea from the mind onto the canvas as a finished work while retaining the thing that inspired you in the first place.  The sketch is the bridge between the artist’s imagination and the finished work. This show of paintings offers a thematic view of over 50 of these sketches and some of the finished works that resulted from them. It’s a glimpse into my working process, which as you’ll see is rarely a straight line.' - Steven J. Levin

Steven Levin has exhibited widely and taken part in significant group and solo shows in San Francisco, New York, London, Beijing, and Barcelona. He has been featured on the cover of American Artist Magazine and also has been the recipient of numerous awards and prizes in national competitions including the American Society of Portrait Artists, the Allied Artists of America, the Portrait Institute, American Artist Magazine, the Artist’s Magazine, the Oil Painters of America and the American Artists Professional League. Most recently, he is the Third Prize recipient for the ARC 2024 Salon in the still life category. He is represented by Cavalier Gallery of New York, Tree’s Place Gallery on Cape Cod, and Flanders Art Gallery in Minneapolis.

Levin lives and works in Stillwater, Minnesota.

“Steven Levin is unquestionably one of the finest mid-career artists working in the realism genre in the United Sates today. Hard working, always expanding his range, Levin stands out amongst his peers. His name is deeply etched into the rolls of 21st century American realists”

–  John Pence, Founder, John Pence Gallery of San Francisco.
